L319 3-Door Conversion

The Series 1 Land Rover Discovery was initially available with three doors only from October 1989. A year later in 1990, the facelift introduced four doors and every iteration since then has kept that formula. Often have I wondered what a three door version of the L319 Discovery would have looked like, so I fired up Adobe Photoshop and made this my first new project in 2025.

In order to make it feasible for production in the expected low numbers, I paid attention to cost saving. The wheelbase remains the same and for the same reason the front door remains the same – as it was on the Series 1 Discovery. This necessitates the horizontal crease to end just shy of the B-pillar shut line instead of continuing to the door handle, as it does on the five-door version. The result is a rather elegant LR3 Discovery. This would be an ideal base for a nice 2-seater overlanding rig, increasing the load space.

I also created a bare work van version, stripped to the bones and popular for tax reasons in the UK. An added benefit is the large flat side panel with plenty of space to advertise the business.
