V8 Dragster
The Porsche 928 was a fast and luxurious long distance cruiser when it was new. Die-hard Porsche fans never really accepted the 928, because “it has the wrong engine at the wrong end” and therefore many of them suffered a rather pitiful career. A string of owners wanted to look rich on a budget, but unfortunately it usually was too tight to carry out regular maintenance. The cars fell into disrepair at some point and adorned many a backyard as immobile statues of their former self.
Chevrolet Small Block V8 Engine Swap
Imagine living in California, finding one of those abandoned and derelict early 928s in a garage or shed in the 1990’s with shiny paint but a non-running engine. Original Porsche parts are available, but spending huge amounts of money on a vehicle not really worth anything doesn’t make sense. Looking at the slick bodywork, pictures of land speed record cars and dragsters pop up in your head. As your budget is more local drag strip than Bonneville Salt Lake, you acquire a set of slot mags and a small block equipped Pontiac Firebird or Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z for little money and start engine-swapping the Porsche 928. Many hours of blood, sweat and tears later you roll your machine out of the garage and take a picture in front of your neighbors business HQ. Now isn’t that something to be proud of?
In 2019, I created a project based on a similar idea: the Porsche 928 LSR Shooting Brake.
