Stilbaai to Stellenbosch

14.04.2012   |   Stilbaai → Cape Aghulas → Hermanus → Stellenbosch

Having enjoyed a couple of baie lekker pancakes for breakfast, we left Stilbaai and headed towards Riversdale. Long before arriving there we could see the famous rock formation called the Sleeping Beauty. Leaving her behind we followed the N2 before turning off towards Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas. Our visit to the southernmost point of Africa was almost spoiled by the southernmost bitch of South Africa, who must have rented the spot exclusively, trying to shoo us away from the historic landmark. Mind you, it was totally off-season and saying we counted a dozen people would be an exaggeration. But anyway, we eventually moved on to see the wreck of the Meisho Maru 38, a Japanese trawler that ran aground in 1982 and has been falling apart since. Not much left of it in 2012!

We then bought some supplies in the local superette and drove to Hermanus. To my delight, we traveled on the unpaved roads via Elim. The weather wasn’t really nice the whole day: gusting wind and some rain. We figured that we should try to fight it by buying ice-cream in Hermanus. The beach dassie you see in one of the pictures also wanted some, but fortunately there was a 2m gap between the tree and the wall we sat on.

Just before turning off from the N2 towards Stellenbosch I spotted a classic car dealership in Somerset West. Naturally I stopped and had a look around 😉

We checked into a (somewhat iffy) backpacker in Stellenbosch. It was Saturday night, so we met up with some of Marizcas’ friends, had dinner with them and a great night out! Quite a party town to be honest, not only a destination for day visitors…

PS: The light in this part of the country sometimes really does play tricks on your eyes. Note the weird hue in some of the pictures.
